These systems are highly effective in containing, detecting and controlling or/and to get rid of a fire event in the early stages. Involvement of fire protection engineers is must in every aspects of the design of the fire systems in order to ensure a reasonable degree of safety of human life from fire and the produces of combustion. This also helps in reducing the possible loss from fire which can effect information, real and personal property, organizational operations, etc. To plan fire protection in/around a building, it is essential to know the four causes of fire: man made, natural, incidental and wildfire. After this, an integrated systems approach is taken to enable the designers to examine every components of the building to form a complete building fire safety system package. The analysis is not complete up to meeting the minimum legal responsibilities or code compliance for building protection. This implies that the codes for building and fire are only supposed to limit the impact of fire community and protect against loss of life. These do not necessarily safeguard the assets or mission, and also, do not solve problems brought upon by the unique circumstances in the new projects. Behind the success of any complex project, it is the collective efforts of owners, stakeholders, special consultants, designers and AHJs to attain performance-based designing solutions. The Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE) has formulated and published the SFPE Engineering Guide in collaboration with NFPA to Performance-Based Fire Protection Analysis and Design of Buildings. It has also collaborated with ICC to develop and publish the SFPE Code Official's Guide to Performance-Based Design Review.
Issues that arise during the development of a successful fire protection design generally include:
Design Team: It is crucial that the project delivery team involve a Fire Protection Engineer who has competent knowledge and experience in the designing of fire protection and life safety system. The Fire Protection Engineer should have involvement in all the stages of design, right from planning to the final occupancy.
Design Standards and Criteria (i.e., Building Code, etc.): These standards are to be used by the design team, including voluntary requirements, statutory requirements, addressing performance needs of the owner and needs that are sometimes obligatory by insurance cover on commercial projects
Site Requirements: A flexible site design will incorporate performance requirements related to the suppression, fire department access, and site/building security along with separation distances.
